An in-office treatment for submental fullness or “double chin,” Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment to improve the appearance of fullness under the chin. This procedure is customized for each patient to achieve their goals.
Kybella destroys fat cells with the active ingredient deoxycholic acid. This is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat, which means once the patient’s aesthetic goal is achieved (typically after 2 to 4 treatments), re-treatment is not expected to be necessary.
What to expect with a Kybella treatment
After assessing the area to be treated, your clinician may apply or inject local anesthesia to the treatment area to make you more comfortable. This is followed by a series of injections to the fat under your chin. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes. After treatment, cold packs may be applied. The most common side effects are bruising, swelling, numbness or redness to the treatment area. Your clinician will review all possible side effects at your consultation.
